The President of the United Republic of Tanzania issued a Notice on Assignment of Ministerial Functions (Instrument) No. 144 of 22nd April 2016 and its amendment on 7th October 2017.

In that Instrument, the President has created a Ministry of Energy which is mandated to formulate and monitor implementation of Policies on Energy, Oil and Gas.

The Ministry is also responsible for Energy and Petroleum Resource Management; Value addition in Petroleum; Oil and Gas Infrastructure Development; Bulk Procurement of Oil; Urban and Rural Electricity Programmes; Local Content in Energy and Petroleum; Renewable and Non Renewable Sources of Energy; Performance Improvement and Development of Human Resources; Extra-Ministerial Departments, Parastatal Organisations, Agencies, Programmes and Projects under this Ministry.
